Sport Supplementation – Is it necessary?
In short, no. Athletes can make great gains without supplementation. It is however beneficial to anyone who likes the convenience or wants to ensure that his/hers body is creating / maintaining the right environment for success. In more or less it’s optimal. This obviously doesn't apply to professional athletes as in the pro
circuits all the minor things can make the difference.
There are many gimmicky products out there and as many, let’s say less ethical, manufactures who pray on the young and those new to their sport. Take Bodybuilding for example. A product may claim to add an extra 10 pounds of lean muscle to your frame in a few weeks. That’s total rubbish. Very few people can gain that even with steroid assistance. These products are very well worded and ever better marketed.
Here is what we recommend as beneficial or optimal (in order):
Whey Protein
Got to be the easiest way to meet the high protein ratio which most athletes require. Eating “proper food" for your protein source is preferred, however due to time constraints and convenience it’s quick, easy and these recommended ones are great tasting.
Creatine
There are now two commonly used types of Creatine. Creatine Monohydrate and Creatine Ethyl Ester. The purpose of Creatine is for retaining extra water in your muscle cells. This gives athletes who require strength or size stronger workouts and also give a fuller appearance. It’s only temporary.
Multi Vitamins
Again, it's preferred to get all your nutrients from whole foods. However most athletes require more nutrients that the average person. Exercise can deplete your levels. Consuming a daily multivitamin will ensure you’re getting enough vitamin. If you’re deficient in a vitamin or mineral then you will greatly benefit from vitamin supplementation.
Carbohydrates
You should be getting the picture now. Yes, carbohydrates should come from food sources. However there is one time in the day when carbohydrates supplementation is optimal.
